Warm white, cool white and multicolour: choosing a decorative light

Decorative lighting is chosen by look, and the single biggest factor is colour — not how many bulbs are on the string.

Warm white

The default for festivals and for anything meant to feel welcoming. It flatters wood, brass and warm paint. If in doubt, this is the one.

Cool white

Reads crisp and modern, and shows up better against white walls and glass. It can look clinical indoors in the evening, which is why it is more common in display and window use.

Multicolour

Best used where it is the feature — a tree, a party corner, a child’s room. Multicolour across a whole living space competes with everything else in it.

Mixing

One temperature per sightline. Warm and cool sets on the same balcony rail read as a mistake even when both are working perfectly.

On modes

Many sets include flashing or chasing modes. Where a set has them, the page lists them as given. A steady setting is the one most people end up leaving it on.
